Dump pouches are one of the most underrated pieces of gear a person can have in their tactical arsenal. Though they may seem simple, these pouches can serve a variety of purposes and make your life much easier in the field.

In this article, we will discuss what dump pouches are, what they are used for, and where to place them on your body for optimal use. So let’s get started!

What Is a Dump Pouch?

A dump pouch is a type of tactical gear that is typically used by military personnel, law enforcement officers, and first responders. It’s designed to hold empty magazines and other small items that need to be disposed of quickly and safely.

Dump pouches come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and styles, but they all serve the same basic purpose. Some dump pouches also have additional features, such as a water-resistant lining or an adjustable closure.

What’s the Point of a Dump Pouch?

The main purpose of a dump pouch is to provide a quick and easy way to get rid of empty magazines and other small items that you no longer need. This can be extremely important in a combat situation, where every second counts.

Dump pouches are a great way to help you speed up your magazine reloads without dropping your empty (or partially empty) magazines on the ground.

Dump pouches can also be used as a place to store other small items that you might need quick access to, such as grenades or flashlights. Or even used for foraging and so on.

Dumping vs Dropping Mags vs Placing Them Back in the Pouch

There are a few different ways to reload your weapon, and each has its own pros and cons.

One option is to simply drop your empty magazines on the ground. This is quick and easy, but it can be messy and it’s not always the safest option.

Pros

  • Quick and easy
  • No need to fumble around with a pouch
  • Magazines will get dirt and other particles in them
  • Empty magazines can be lost
  • You won’t always have a chance to pick the mags back up in a real combat situation

Another option is to place your empty magazines back in your magazine pouch. This keeps things neater, but it’s slow.

Pros

  • Keeps your magazines safe
  • Keeps mags clean
  • Takes more time
  • Can be hard to get the mags back in the pouch
  • You might mix up empty and full mags
  • Requires a lot of practice to get proficient

The final option is to use a dump pouch. It’s slower than dropping mags on the ground but much faster than trying to place them back in your mag pouch.

Pros

  • Magazines are less likely to get lost or damaged
  • Quick option
  • Takes more time to reload than dropping mags on the ground
  • Takes up space on your load-bearing gear

But What Is the Best Option?

Now, there isn’t a simple answer to that. It really depends on what your priorities are and what type of situation you’re in.

Dropping mags on the ground is definitely the fastest option there is when it comes to reloading your weapon. But it’s also the messiest and least safe option.

If you’re in a combat situation where every second counts and well you don’t want to risk losing your magazines, then you might want to consider using a dump pouch. It’s not as fast as simply dropping your mags on the ground, but it’s much faster than trying to place them back in your mag pouch.

How to Choose a Dump Pouch?

When it comes to choosing the best dump pouch, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.

The first thing you should think about is the size and capacity of the dump pouch. You’ll want to make sure it’s large enough to hold all the magazines you need to reload, but not so large that it’s bulky and gets in the way.

Also, consider where you are going to attach the dump pouch and what type of dump pouch you need. There are basically three types of dump pouches: roll-up, folding, and leg attached.

The opening of the dump pouch and its overall retention are also important factors to think about. If you’re in a combat situation, you want to be able to drop your mags in the dump pouch as quickly and effortlessly as possible but you don’t want your magazines falling out of the pouch while you are on the move.

And finally, consider its material and durability. You want a dump pouch that is made from high-quality materials and that will be able to withstand a lot of wear and tear.

Where to Place a Dump Pouch?

Well, there are two options for this. You can either attach it to your waistline (tactical belt or battle belt) or to your body (plate carrier or tactical vest)

Tactical Belt or a Battle Belt

Keeping your dump pouch on your battle belt or tactical belt is a great option. Because the opening of the dump pouch is just below your waistline (or at your waist level) it allows you to drop your empty mags in it really quickly and the movement is quite natural.

Now the downsides to this are that when you have some mags in it it can start to sag a bit and also when you are moving around it can bounce around and hit your legs (especially if you’re running).

Now for the actual placement, you can either keep on your weaker side at around 7 to 9 o’clock. Or you could keep it at the center back of your belt. The last option allows you to access it with both hands.

Plate Carrier or a Tactical Vest

The other option is to place your dump pouch on your plate carrier or tactical vest. The upside to this is that it’s less likely to bounce around and hit your legs when you’re moving and also that it’s more secure since it’s attached to your body.

The downside, however, is that it can be a bit harder to access because the dump pouch will be placed higher (also it’s not as smooth of a movement) and also that it might get in the way of the gear on your belt line (for example if you use a battle belt).

The placement is pretty much the same as keeping it on your belt.

Which Is Better?

I personally like to keep my dump pouch on my battle belt. It’s a great option because it allows me to access it quickly and easily.

But ultimately, it really depends on your personal preferences and your tactical loadout!

In Conclusion

Dump pouches are an extremely useful piece of gear, especially if you’re in a combat situation. They allow you to quickly and easily reload your weapon without having to worry about losing your magazines.

When choosing a dump pouch, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind, such as size, capacity, retention, and material. You should also decide if you want to attach it to your belt or body.
